ABUJA, Nigeria — Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former presidential adviser and political commentator, has called on President Bola Tinubu to speak directly to Nigerians following reports of a potential U.S. military threat linked to alleged human rights violations.

In a statement posted on social media, Baba-Ahmed criticized the president’s continued silence. “This is not the time for ministers or aides to issue statements,” he wrote. “The President himself should calm the nation, explain our position, and outline the steps he intends to take.”

The comments follow the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious freedom violations, prompting speculation about diplomatic or military consequences.

Baba-Ahmed also cautioned against reports that Tinubu may consider traveling to the United States to meet with American officials, calling such a move “ill-advised” and potentially damaging to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The call has sparked widespread debate across Nigerian media and social platforms. Civil society groups and political analysts have echoed Baba-Ahmed’s concerns, urging transparency and decisive leadership.

Online, many Nigerians expressed frustration and anxiety. One user commented, “We deserve to hear from our president, not just his aides.” Another wrote, “This is a serious matter. Tinubu must speak now.”

Opposition figures and commentators have also weighed in, with some calling for an emergency address to clarify Nigeria’s stance and reassure citizens.

As of Thursday morning, the presidency had not issued an official response to Baba-Ahmed’s remarks or the U.S. designation.
