SYDNEY (FN) — A police officer has been hailed as a hero after fatally shooting one of the attackers responsible for the Bondi Beach massacre, bringing Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades to an end.
Detective Senior Constable Cesar Barraza was identified by Australian media as the officer who killed Sajid Akram, 50, during the antisemitic attack that left at least 15 people dead and dozens injured. Barraza, armed only with a handgun, moved into position and fired from about 45 meters (150 feet) away, a shot described as extraordinary under the circumstances.
The massacre unfolded on December 14 at Bondi Beach, where hundreds had gathered for a Hanukkah by the Sea celebration. Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed, 24, opened fire from a footbridge near the Bondi Pavilion, sending crowds fleeing in panic.
Barraza’s intervention was pivotal. His shot killed Sajid Akram, halting part of the assault. Minutes later, Naveed Akram was critically injured after being shot and subdued, ending the immediate threat.
