SYDNEY (FN) — A police officer has been hailed as a hero after fatally shooting one of the attackers responsible for the Bondi Beach massacre, bringing Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades to an end.
Detective Senior Constable Cesar Barraza was identified by Australian media as the officer who killed Sajid Akram, 50, during the antisemitic attack that left at least 15 people dead and dozens injured. Barraza, armed only with a handgun, moved into position and fired from about 45 meters (150 feet) away, a shot described as extraordinary under the circumstances.
The massacre unfolded on December 14 at Bondi Beach, where hundreds had gathered for a Hanukkah by the Sea celebration. Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed, 24, opened fire from a footbridge near the Bondi Pavilion, sending crowds fleeing in panic.
Barraza’s intervention was pivotal. His shot killed Sajid Akram, halting part of the assault. Minutes later, Naveed Akram was critically injured after being shot and subdued, ending the immediate threat.
Videos from the scene show the chaos as gunfire erupted, followed by Barraza’s decisive action. Security experts have called his response “once‑in‑a‑lifetime policing,” noting that his accuracy under pressure prevented further casualties.

The attack has been described by authorities as a targeted antisemitic assault. Jewish communities across Australia and worldwide have expressed grief and fear, with leaders warning of rising antisemitism globally.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the massacre as “an attack on all Australians,” pledging increased security at religious and cultural events. Vigils have been held across Sydney, with thousands gathering to honor the victims.
Barraza’s bravery has drawn widespread praise. Community leaders and fellow officers have lauded his courage, while civilians such as Ahmed Al‑Ahmed — who tackled and disarmed Naveed Akram despite being injured — have also been recognized as heroes.
The Bondi Beach massacre is the worst mass shooting in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur tragedy, which killed 35 people and led to sweeping gun reforms. The latest attack has reignited debates about extremism, hate crimes, and public safety.
For many Australians, Barraza’s actions symbolize resilience in the face of terror. His precision shot and calm under fire are credited with saving countless lives, ensuring the tragedy did not claim even more victims.
