ABUJA, Nigeria Public commentator Solomon Buchi has criticized supporters of Nigerian singer Simi after several of her past social media posts resurfaced, sparking renewed debate.

The posts, originally published years ago, included remarks that some interpreted as reinforcing ethnic stereotypes. Screenshots of the tweets began circulating again online, prompting widespread discussion.

Buchi condemned those defending the artist, describing such reactions as dismissive of the serious implications of her words. He argued that excusing celebrities from accountability weakens broader efforts to address bias and protect vulnerable groups.

Many fans defended Simi, insisting that the comments were made in a different cultural context and should not define her today. Some argued that the resurfaced tweets were “harmless jokes” from her early career, while others emphasized her growth and maturity since then. Supporters highlighted her contributions to music and suggested that focusing on old remarks distracts from her achievements.

Opponents, however, described the tweets as offensive and unacceptable, regardless of when they were written. Several critics accused her of perpetuating stereotypes and called for a public apology. Buchi himself labeled those defending her as “evil,” claiming that such defenses reveal societal double standards and gender bias.

The controversy reflects a global trend in which historic online statements by entertainers and public figures are revisited, often igniting discussions about accountability, cancel culture, and the long-term consequences of social media activity.
