Hungary’s election campaign has been overtaken by the war in Ukraine, with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán casting himself as the guardian of national security while his opponents accuse him of stoking fear to maintain power.
Orbán’s Fidesz party insists Hungary must stay out of the conflict, warning of alleged Ukrainian interference and sabotage attempts. Opposition leader Péter Magyar counters that Orbán is using the war as a distraction from corruption and economic stagnation, pledging closer ties with the European Union if elected.
The campaign has sparked heated debate among voters. Supporters of Orbán say his cautious stance is the only way to keep Hungary safe, while critics argue he is isolating the country from allies and undermining EU unity. On social media, hashtags such as #PeaceForHungary and #StopFearPolitics reflect the divide.
European officials are watching closely. Disinformation and deepfake videos have flooded Hungarian platforms, raising concerns about foreign interference. Slovakia has already signaled it would block EU loans to Ukraine if Orbán loses, underscoring how Hungary’s vote could reshape Europe’s response to the war.
For ordinary Hungarians, the issue is deeply personal. A shopkeeper in Budapest said, “We want peace, but we also want honesty. I don’t trust politicians who use war to scare us.” A university student countered, “Orbán is right. If Ukraine drags us into this conflict, Hungary will suffer. We need strong leadership to keep us safe.”
The election is now more than a domestic contest. Its outcome could determine whether the EU maintains a united front on Ukraine or fractures under pressure from Budapest and Bratislava, with consequences for energy security, sanctions, and aid to Kyiv.
