ABUJA (FN), Labour Party national spokesperson Abayomi Arabambi said Wednesday that former presidential candidate Peter Obi “can never come back” to the party, closing the door on speculation about his political future with Labour.
Obi, who contested the 2023 election under Labour, has since aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling its recent convention a “defining moment” in Nigeria’s democratic journey. Arabambi argued that Obi’s history of switching parties undermines Labour’s credibility and insisted the party has moved beyond the internal crises of his tenure.
The statement drew mixed reactions. Analysts said it highlights the fragility of Nigeria’s opposition, while some lawmakers welcomed the clarity. Civil society groups warned the move could fragment opposition support, and social media users debated whether Obi’s exclusion reflects principle or opportunism.
The controversy underscores the challenges facing Nigeria’s opposition parties as they seek to build unity and credibility ahead of future elections.
