UMUAHIA, Nigeria (FN) , Iheanyi Chinasa, the National Assembly Liaison Officer to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move signaling growing political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The development was disclosed in a Sunday statement signed by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. Chinasa’s defection is seen as part of a broader wave of political repositioning as parties and politicians begin to strategize for the next electoral cycle.

Governor Otti, elected under the Labour Party banner in 2023, has faced mounting pressure as opposition parties seek to expand their influence in Abia State. Analysts say Chinasa’s move to the APC could strengthen the party’s foothold in the Southeast, a region traditionally dominated by other political blocs.

Nigeria’s political landscape has often witnessed high-profile defections in the run-up to general elections. In 2014, several governors and lawmakers crossed over to the APC from the then-ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), reshaping the balance of power ahead of the 2015 polls. Similar shifts occurred before the 2019 and 2023 elections, underscoring the fluid nature of party loyalty in the country.

Observers note that Chinasa’s defection may be an early indication of the intense political maneuvering expected as the 2027 race draws closer.
