JOS, Nigeria (FN), Heavy security was deployed in Jos on Wednesday as authorities arraigned several suspects linked to recent killings in Plateau State, underscoring the tense atmosphere surrounding the case.
Armed police officers and soldiers mounted checkpoints around the High Court premises, while patrol vehicles lined adjoining streets to prevent disruptions. Journalists and observers were subjected to strict screening before being allowed entry, reflecting heightened concerns over possible unrest.
The suspects, accused of involvement in deadly attacks on communities in Bassa and Riyom local government areas, were brought before the court under tight escort. Prosecutors said charges include culpable homicide and terrorism-related offenses.
The arraignment follows weeks of violence in Plateau, where clashes between armed groups and local communities have left dozens dead and displaced hundreds. Security agencies have vowed to intensify operations to restore peace, while civil society groups continue to call for justice and accountability.
Court officials said proceedings will continue in phases, with additional suspects expected to face trial in the coming weeks.
