COPENHAGEN, Denmark (FN), Two passenger trains collided head-on in western Denmark on Wednesday, leaving at least five people critically injured and dozens more hurt, authorities said.

The crash occurred near the town of Holstebro shortly after 7 a.m. local time, when one train traveling eastbound struck another heading westbound on the same track. Emergency services rushed to the scene, deploying helicopters, ambulances and rescue teams to evacuate passengers.

Police confirmed that five victims were in critical condition, while several others sustained less severe injuries. Officials said investigations are underway to determine whether a signaling error or human mistake caused the collision.

Images from the scene showed mangled carriages and shattered windows, with passengers being assisted by rescue workers. Rail operator DSB said services in the region have been suspended until further notice.

Denmark has experienced few major rail accidents in recent years, though a 2019 crash on the Great Belt Bridge killed eight people. Wednesday’s collision has renewed calls for stricter safety protocols on regional lines.
