Gateman Arrested for Allegedly Killing Transport Manager in Lagos

LAGOS, Nigeria (FN), Police in Lagos have arrested a residential gateman accused of murdering his employer, a 65‑year‑old transport manager, in what investigators described as a shocking case of domestic violence.

Authorities said the victim, whose name has not yet been released publicly, was found dead inside his home after neighbors raised alarm. The gateman, employed to guard the property, allegedly attacked the man during a dispute and fled the scene before being apprehended.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the suspect is in custody and will face charges once investigations are complete. “This is a tragic breach of trust. A gateman is expected to protect his employer, not harm him,” a police spokesperson said.

Similar cases of domestic staff turning violent have surfaced in Nigeria in recent years, prompting calls for stricter vetting and background checks. In 2023, a house help in Abuja was arrested for allegedly stabbing his employer during a robbery attempt, while in 2021, a driver in Ibadan was charged with killing his boss after a financial dispute.

Stakeholders in the transport sector expressed shock at the incident, noting that the victim was a respected manager with decades of service. Labor unions urged authorities to strengthen workplace and home security measures. On social media, Nigerians reacted with outrage, with hashtags like LagosCrime and JusticeForTransportManager trending as users demanded swift prosecution.
