LOS ANGELES (FN) The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has stormed the box office, smashing records with a S97 million domestic debut and S217 million worldwide, making it the highest‑grossing opening ever for a music biopic.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the title role, the film dramatizes the King of Pop’s rise to global superstardom. Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences flocked to theaters, giving the movie an A‑ CinemaScore and driving strong turnout across demographics.
The film’s opening surpasses previous biopic records set by Straight Outta Compton (S60 million) and Bohemian Rhapsody (S51 million). Analysts say Michael could challenge Bohemian Rhapsody’s S910 million global total if momentum continues.
Produced with the cooperation of the Jackson estate, the film has drawn controversy for avoiding allegations of child sexual abuse, which critics argue sanitizes Jackson’s story. Family members including Janet Jackson and Paris Jackson have also voiced concerns about the portrayal.
Still, Lionsgate executives hailed the film’s success. “These are huge numbers across every conceivable demographic,” said motion picture chair Adam Fogelson. The studio is expected to explore sequel opportunities to continue Jackson’s story beyond the 1980s.
The film’s record‑breaking debut underscores the enduring fascination with Michael Jackson’s legacy, more than 15 years after his death.
