Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has mocked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over Peter Obi’s departure from the party, likening its treatment of the former Anambra governor to that of a “side-chick.” His remarks, delivered through a romantic analogy, have gone viral and stirred debate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Keyamo said the ADC failed to give Obi the recognition and commitment he deserved, comparing the situation to a bachelor who refuses to make a prized girlfriend his first wife, instead proposing to keep her as a “side-chick.” In his words: “The beautiful woman, who knows her worth, has no time to waste waiting for this bachelor and walks away quietly to another suitor who knows her worth and assures her instantly she’d be the first wife. Haba! bachelor, why not just stick with your other woman and let her be? This is just the case of Peter Obi and the ADC.”

Obi resigned from the ADC in May 2026, citing persistent internal disputes and legal battles within the party. He has since joined the New Democratic Congress (NDC), where he is expected to pursue his presidential ambition. Analysts suggest Obi could align with other defectors like former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, strengthening opposition forces ahead of 2027.
Civil society groups say Keyamo’s analogy highlights the lack of internal democracy in Nigerian parties. Opposition figures argue that Keyamo is meddling in opposition affairs, while supporters see his comments as a witty but accurate portrayal of ADC’s missteps. On social media, Nigerians remain divided — some applauded Obi for leaving a party that couldn’t guarantee him a ticket, while others accused him of political opportunism.

Keyamo’s remarks carry weight given his own background as a lawyer, activist, and politician. Born in Delta State in 1970, he studied law at Ambrose Alli University and began his career under renowned human rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi. He later founded Festus Keyamo Chambers, handling high-profile cases including treason trials and constitutional disputes. Known for his fearless activism, he transitioned into politics, serving as Director of Strategic Communications for Buhari’s 2019 campaign before being appointed Minister of State for Labour and Employment. In 2023, President Bola Tinubu named him Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development. His outspoken style and sharp analogies have made him one of Nigeria’s most controversial political figures, often dominating headlines with remarks that blend wit and provocation.
