Herbalist’s wife attacks co-wife with boiling water

OGOJA, Nigeria (FN) — Police in northern Cross River State have arrested a woman accused of pouring boiling water on her husband’s second wife during a domestic dispute that left the victim hospitalized with severe burns.

Authorities said the incident occurred Saturday morning in Wodah village, Yala Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Blessing, is the first wife of a local herbalist known as Dr. Respect Ogar.

Investigators said Blessing allegedly attacked her co-wife, Mary, after years of tension over marital status and property. Blessing, who has five sons with Ogar, has not had her bride price paid or undergone formal traditional rites. Mary, who has no children, reportedly had her bride price settled and marriage rites completed, and was given property and housing by Ogar.

Police said the dispute escalated when Blessing allegedly doused Mary with hot water, causing burns to her chest and stomach. Mary was initially treated at a private clinic before being transferred to Ogoja General Hospital. She is expected to be moved to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for further care.

Blessing was taken into custody at Okuku Police Station but later transferred to the Divisional Police Station in Okpoma amid concerns for her safety following threats of retaliation from Mary’s family.

Domestic violence remains a widespread issue in Nigeria, where cultural practices such as polygamy can intensify household conflicts. Rights groups have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women from abuse.
