Arsenal’s unbeaten run ends in heartbreak as PSG claim Champions League

BUDAPEST — Arsenal’s dream of lifting their first UEFA Champions League trophy came to a crushing end Saturday night, as Paris Saint-Germain edged them 4-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw at the Puskás Aréna.

Kai Havertz gave the Gunners hope with an early strike in the sixth minute, but Ousmane Dembélé equalized from the spot midway through the second half. Despite Arsenal’s unbeaten campaign, 11 wins and four draws across 15 matches; they became the first team in the modern era to finish a Champions League season without defeat yet fail to claim the trophy.

Gabriel Magalhães’ missed penalty proved decisive, handing PSG back-to-back European crowns under coach Luis Enrique. The French side, who dominated possession with 74 percent and fired 21 shots to Arsenal’s seven, celebrated their second consecutive triumph after last year’s victory over Inter Milan.

The result sparked an outpouring of emotion online. Nigerian Twitter lit up with hashtags like #UnbeatenButEmpty and #ArtetaOut, reflecting frustration among fans. One supporter wrote: “How do you go unbeaten and still lose the Champions League? Arsenal always find new ways to break our hearts.” Another added: “Gabriel’s miss will haunt us forever. This was our year.”

Others praised PSG’s resilience. A fan posted: “Luis Enrique has turned PSG into a European machine. Back-to-back titles, and they did it the hard way.”

The outcome drew historical comparisons to Atlético Madrid’s 1973–74 European Cup campaign, when the Spanish side also finished unbeaten but lost in a replay to Bayern Munich. Arsenal now joins that rare company of clubs who came agonizingly close yet left empty-handed.

PSG will next face Europa League champions Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup, a clash set to determine who truly rules Europe.
