ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — The United States has designated a Nigerian national along with individuals and entities in Europe, the Middle East and West Africa as alleged financial facilitators of the Islamic State group, in a move aimed at disrupting the extremist organization’s global funding networks.
The action, announced Monday in a statement signed by U.S. Department of State spokesperson Thomas Pigott, targeted three individuals and six entities accused of helping ISIS move money across borders to sustain its operations. The designations cover Nigeria, France, Syria and Türkiye.
Pigott said the sanctions were part of Washington’s broader efforts to dismantle ISIS financing channels, which remain critical to the group’s ability to recruit, plan attacks and maintain influence despite territorial losses in Iraq and Syria.
Under U.S. law, the designations freeze any assets the individuals or entities may have under American jurisdiction and prohibit U.S. persons from conducting business with them. The move also signals to international partners the importance of tightening financial oversight to prevent extremist groups from exploiting global banking systems.
Nigeria’s inclusion reflects growing concerns about ISIS-linked networks in West Africa, where extremist violence has destabilized parts of the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. Analysts say the designation underscores Washington’s focus on preventing the spread of jihadist financing beyond the Middle East.
International reactions are expected to follow. European governments have previously coordinated with the U.S. on similar sanctions, while regional organizations in Africa have called for stronger measures to cut off funding for extremist groups.
The U.S. sanctions highlight the continuing challenge of combating ISIS’s financial networks, with Nigeria now drawn into a global effort to block funds that fuel terrorism. The designations reinforce Washington’s message that counterterrorism requires coordinated international action across continents.
