A 28-year-old father who gave his life rescuing two people from drowning has continued to save lives even after his death by becoming an organ donor.
On 24 May 2026, Rushabh Patel was enjoying a family picnic at Bury Field in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, when two people from his group got into difficulty while swimming in the River Great Ouse at a popular open-water spot known locally as “The Beach.”
Without hesitation, Rushabh jumped into the river and successfully rescued both swimmers.
However, during the rescue, he suffered a cardiac arrest and drowned. Emergency services responded to the scene, and he was airlifted to Milton Keynes University Hospital, where doctors fought for several days to save his life.
Despite their efforts, Rushabh died on 28 May.
His wife, Mili, and their 18-month-old daughter, Vrumi, witnessed the heartbreaking incident.
Recalling the moment, Mili said: “I just saw his head above the water, and I can’t explain that feeling.”
She also revealed that their young daughter wakes up at 5 a.m. every morning searching for her father.
Paying tribute, Rushabh’s brother, Aman Patel, said: “Rushabh’s final act on this earth was one of extraordinary courage and sacrifice. He gave his life while saving others. He was a hero in every sense of the word.”
Originally from near Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat, Rushabh had moved to the United Kingdom in search of a better future for his family. His loved ones described him as a devoted husband and father who always put others before himself and was known for his willingness to help anyone in need.
Rushabh’s generosity did not end with his death. Through organ donation, he gave up to six people a second chance at life, ensuring that his final act of kindness continued long after he was gone. His story has also drawn attention to the life-changing impact of organ donation, with thousands of people across the United Kingdom waiting for life-saving transplants.
Following his death, Rushabh’s family launched a fundraising campaign to help support Mili and Vrumi. The appeal received an outpouring of support from members of the public, many of whom described him as a true hero whose courage and selflessness should never be forgotten.
His death has also renewed calls for caution around open-water swimming. Safety experts warn that rivers can pose hidden dangers, including cold-water shock, strong currents, submerged obstacles, and sudden changes in depth, which can quickly overwhelm even confident swimmers.
Rushabh Patel’s extraordinary courage ensured that two people returned home to their families that day. Through his decision to become an organ donor, his legacy of compassion has continued, offering hope and a second chance at life to up to six others long after his final act of heroism.
He is survived by his wife, Mili, and their daughter, Vrumi, whose lives will forever bear the mark of his extraordinary courage, compassion, and selflessness.
