China has announced a broad package of retaliatory measures against the United States and several American companies, escalating tensions between the world’s two largest economies despite plans for a high-level meeting between their leaders next month. Beijing said the actions were a response to recent U.S. measures targeting Chinese companies, describing the sanctions as a necessary countermeasure against what it called Washington’s restrictions on Chinese businesses.

The latest exchange of sanctions comes just weeks before an expected summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in the United States, a meeting that analysts say could shape the future of bilateral relations on trade, technology and national security.

The announcement underscores the fragile state of U.S.-China relations, which have been marked by years of economic rivalry, export controls, sanctions and disputes over technology, Taiwan and security. Since the trade war that began during Trump’s first administration in 2018, both countries have increasingly relied on tariffs, sanctions and investment restrictions to pressure one another, with many multinational companies caught in the middle.

Despite periodic efforts to stabilize ties through diplomatic engagement, tensions have persisted as both governments seek to protect strategic industries and expand their influence in global markets. The upcoming Xi-Trump meeting is expected to test whether both sides can ease the confrontation or whether the cycle of retaliation will continue.
