Patrick Clancy, the former husband of Lindsay Clancy, is considering legal action against social media influencers and others who have spread claims falsely linking him to the deaths of the couple’s three children, according to his attorney.
Attorney Howard Cooper said Patrick Clancy has faced an escalating campaign of misinformation and defamatory statements, including accusations that he was somehow involved in the January 2023 deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Cooper said the allegations have also generated threats affecting his client’s safety, reputation and livelihood.
“Enough is enough,” Cooper said in a statement, warning those responsible that “there will be consequences.” His legal team has also notified law enforcement about the threats and online accusations. No evidence has emerged from the criminal proceedings linking Patrick Clancy to the killings.
The warning has been directed particularly at online personalities and conspiracy theorists who amplified allegations during and after Lindsay Clancy’s highly publicized murder trial. Cooper accused some commentators of exploiting the family tragedy to increase social media engagement and profit from sensational claims.
However, reports that Patrick Clancy has already filed lawsuits against a group of TikTok influencers go beyond what has been publicly confirmed. His attorneys have said legal action is being pursued or considered, but no publicly identified series of defamation lawsuits has yet been announced.
Lindsay Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, has also strongly defended Patrick against the online accusations. He described the conspiracy claims as “horrific” and said Patrick had supported Lindsay throughout her mental health struggles, accompanying her to doctors and hospitals and remaining involved as she sought treatment.
Reddington said Patrick had already endured extraordinary personal trauma and should be allowed to rebuild his life. Patrick was the person who discovered the children after returning to the family’s Duxbury home on Jan. 24, 2023, and his emergency call to authorities became one of the most emotional pieces of evidence presented during the trial.
One juror who heard that 911 recording later rejected the conspiracy theories surrounding Patrick. The juror said the anguish heard in his voice had a lasting emotional impact and made accusations that he secretly committed the killings difficult for her to reconcile with the evidence presented in court.
Lindsay Clancy has not denied killing the children. Her lawyers argued that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and was unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. Prosecutors maintained that she deliberately planned the killings and understood what she was doing.
The trial ended in a mistrial Sept. 4 after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict following seven days of deliberations. The jury was reportedly divided 11 to 1, with most members prepared to find Clancy not criminally responsible because of mental illness. Prosecutors have not announced whether they will seek another trial.
The case has drawn intense international attention since the children’s deaths in 2023, initially because of questions surrounding postpartum mental illness and criminal responsibility. The subsequent growth of online theories illustrates another feature of modern high profile criminal cases, where unverified accusations can spread rapidly on social media before they are tested against evidence presented in court.
Patrick Clancy’s legal warning now opens a separate potential legal battle over those allegations. For now, however, the distinction is important. His lawyers have threatened and are considering legal proceedings against people they accuse of spreading defamatory claims, but there is no confirmed evidence that lawsuits have already been filed against all of the influencers involved.
