Inter Miami’s impressive run came to an end on Wednesday night as FC Cincinnati dominated them 3-0 at TQL Stadium, snapping Lionel Messi’s multi-goal streak in Major League Soccer. The Argentine superstar had scored a brace in five consecutive matches, but his team’s poor performance on the night prevented him from adding to his tally.

FC Cincinnati’s victory was built on the back of excellent teamwork, with young American midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela opening the scoring in the 16th minute. Valenzuela capitalized on a powerful pass from Luca Orellano, showcasing his skill and composure in front of goal. Brazilian forward Evander doubled the lead in the 50th minute and sealed the win with another goal in the 70th minute, taking advantage of a rebound from Orellano’s shot.

The 3-0 scoreline reflected FC Cincinnati’s dominance, with the home team enjoying 56% possession and creating more scoring opportunities. Inter Miami struggled to find their footing, and despite having four corner kicks, they were unable to trouble FC Cincinnati’s defense. Messi, who had been in scintillating form of late, was held quiet by the Cincinnati defense, and his knock late in the game didn’t seem to affect his team’s woes.

The win takes FC Cincinnati to second place in the Eastern Conference standings with 45 points from 14 wins, six draws, and three losses. Inter Miami, on the other hand, fell to 11 wins, four losses, and five draws, with 38 points. The loss ended their six-match unbeaten streak in the MLS.

FC Cincinnati coach praised his team’s performance, highlighting their solid defensive display and clinical finishing. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano attributed the loss to his team’s lack of freshness and lucidity, saying, “We didn’t play the game we wanted. They put us under pressure all the time, we weren’t fresh or lucid, and they beat us very well.”

With this win, FC Cincinnati extends its winning streak against Inter Miami at home, having beaten them for the fourth straight season in MLS play. The Orange and Blue will look to maintain their form when they take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday, July 19.
