Landover, Md. — The Washington Commanders’ season continued its downward spiral Sunday, unraveling in a 44–22 blowout loss to the Detroit Lions that underscored mounting frustration and disciplinary breakdowns on the field.
The defeat marked Washington’s fifth consecutive loss and its fourth straight by a margin of at least 20 points. But it was the team’s conduct — not just its performance — that drew national attention.
In the second quarter, after Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored on a 13-yard rush to extend Detroit’s lead to 17 points, Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne turned and punched Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in the face. The altercation, captured on broadcast footage, led to Payne’s immediate ejection.
On Monday, the NFL announced a one-game suspension for Payne, citing “an act of unsportsmanlike conduct.” He will miss Washington’s Week 11 matchup against the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain.
The incident gave Detroit a shorter field for a two-point conversion, which running back David Montgomery converted, pushing the lead to 19 points. Moments later, Commanders defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after making contact with an official — compounding the team’s disciplinary woes.
Head coach Ron Rivera did not mince words in his postgame remarks. “This kind of behavior is unacceptable,” he said. “We expect better from our leaders, especially in moments of adversity.”
Amon-Ra St. Brown addressed the incident after the game, telling reporters, “We had words a couple plays before. It got heated. I didn’t expect him to swing, but I wasn’t backing down either.”
Around the league, players and analysts weighed in.Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson posted on X, “That’s not football. That’s frustration. You can’t let your team down like that.” Former Commanders linebacker London Fletcher, now an analyst, said on NFL Network, “Payne’s a veteran. He knows better. That punch wasn’t just about St. Brown — it was about a team unraveling.”
Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams tweeted, “Emotions run high. I’ve been there. Still gotta keep your cool, though.”
Payne’s suspension is part of a broader pattern of disciplinary action in the NFL this season:
- Jordan Addison (Minnesota Vikings) was suspended three games following a DUI arrest earlier this year.
- Demarcus Robinson (San Francisco 49ers) received a three-game suspension tied to a separate DUI violation.
- Talanoa Hufanga (San Francisco 49ers) was ejected and fined after punching a Seahawks player during a sideline scuffle in Week 5.
- A Week 6 altercation between Raiders and Chargers players led to two ejections and multiple fines for post-play fighting.
These incidents reflect growing concerns about player conduct and the NFL’s efforts to enforce discipline amid rising tensions on and off the field.
“The Commanders aren’t just losing games — they’re losing control,” said NFL columnist Mike Freeman. “And that’s harder to fix than a broken playbook.”
