A morning derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna passenger train has thrown commuters into chaos, prompting an urgent rescue operation. The incident occurred around 11:09 a.m. near kilometre 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations, when several coaches of the Kaduna-bound AKTS service jumped the tracks and toppled. Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties.
In response, emergency responders, medical personnel, nearby hospitals, and full security teams were quickly mobilised to the scene, where evacuated passengers are being routed back to Abuja for safety. Eyewitnesses and video footage from the crash site show stranded passengers amid a chaotic scene marked by confusion and palpable fear.
The precise cause of the derailment remains unclear. Speculation suggests the train may have “missed a point,” though no official cause has been confirmed. Some voices within the political sphere have already begun attributing blame—for instance, former Senator Shehu Sani has criticized what he describes as negligence on the part of relevant authorities.
Heightened anxiety among those stranded stems not only from the accident itself but also from persistent security threats along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor. Affected passengers expressed acute fear of bandit attacks as they awaited help—a common concern given past assaults along the route.
