The federal government has unveiled a new digital portal developed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), aimed at transforming the teaching profession through technology and innovation.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, described the initiative as a “defining moment” in Nigeria’s education sector.

“This event is not just another ceremony or launch of a platform,” she said. “It is a defining moment in our collective journey to reposition the Nigerian teaching profession for the demands of the 21st century.”

Prof. Ahmad said the portal aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Ministry’s commitment to human capital development and digitization.

Digitalization is no longer optional. It is the language of global competitiveness, innovation, and efficiency,” she said. “We cannot build the Nigeria of our dreams with analogue systems.

She noted that the portal would ensure seamless registration and licensing of teachers nationwide, provide a credible database of qualified professionals, and enable real-time access to professional development opportunities.

We are saying to every teacher in Nigeria: We see you. We value you. We are committed to supporting you,” she added

Also speaking, Ian Attfield, Senior Education Advisor at the British High Commission, commended TRCN’s strategic vision and the diversity of Nigeria’s teaching workforce.

There are lots of different types of teachers—volunteers, faith-based educators, and those in low-cost private schools,” he said. “These systems need to be integrated, smart, and motivating.”

Attfield said the UK government, through the FCDO programme, has supported TRCN in developing the portal and remains committed to helping Nigeria build cohesive data systems across its education agencies.

It’s a Herculean task to pull that all together cohesively,” he said. “But certainly, the UK government stands behind Nigeria to be able to do this effectively over the next couple of years.”

The Minister commended TRCN’s Registrar, Dr. Ronke, and her team for their resilience and commitment to excellence, describing the portal as a “statement of trust” and a pledge to restore dignity to the teaching profession.

She also reaffirmed the Ministry’s full support for TRCN’s digital transformation journey.
