Former Minister of Information and prominent statesman, Professor Jerry Gana, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to elect excellent and visionary leaders in the 2027 general elections. He stressed that the country cannot afford to compromise on quality leadership if it truly seeks progress, stability, and sustainable development in the years ahead.
Speaking at a public forum, Gana lamented the current state of governance, noting that Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural resources but continues to face underdevelopment due to poor leadership choices. He argued that the nation requires leaders who are not only competent but also selfless, patriotic, and genuinely committed to serving the people.
According to him, Nigeria’s political future depends on the collective resolve of citizens to demand accountability and reject mediocrity at the polls. He urged Nigerians to look beyond ethnic, religious, and partisan sentiments when choosing their leaders, stressing that what the nation needs most are individuals with integrity, vision, and the courage to make tough decisions for the greater good.
Gana further warned against the recycling of leaders who have failed to deliver in the past, insisting that fresh ideas and innovative approaches are necessary to reposition the country. He called on political parties to prioritize merit in their selection processes and present candidates who are capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic, security, and social challenges.
The elder statesman also encouraged young Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process, reminding them that the future of the nation lies in their hands. He maintained that by taking an interest in governance and leadership, the youth can help shape a Nigeria that is prosperous, just, and inclusive.
His remarks come at a time when debates about leadership and governance are dominating the national discourse, as citizens increasingly express concerns about the direction of the country. Analysts say Gana’s call reflects the growing demand for credible and competent leadership as the countdown to 2027 begins.
With the general elections still more than a year away, Gana’s message serves as a rallying cry for Nigerians to unite in their quest for excellence in governance, ensuring that the mistakes of the past do not define the future. He concluded by urging citizens to take responsibility for their choices, reminding them that democracy thrives when the electorate insists on quality leadership.
