ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Major-General W. Shaibu as Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, who now serves as Chief of Defence Staff.
Shaibu’s elevation is part of a broader military shake-up aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture. Known for his operational discipline and field experience, Shaibu has held key command positions in counterinsurgency operations and strategic deployments across the country.

His appointment has been described by government officials as a strategic move to enhance synergy among the military services and improve ground-level effectiveness in combating terrorism, banditry, and separatist violence.
Reactions to Shaibu’s appointment have been largely positive. Lawmakers and security analysts praised the decision, citing the need for fresh leadership in the Army. “This is a timely and strategic appointment,” said Senate President Godswill Akpabio. “We expect Major-General Shaibu to act decisively and professionally in restoring peace and stability across the country.”
Public sentiment has also reflected cautious optimism. Some Nigerians expressed hope that Shaibu’s leadership would bring renewed energy and accountability to military operations. Others emphasized the importance of continuity and a clear national security roadmap.
The presidency said all new Service Chiefs are expected to assume office immediately. Shaibu’s leadership will be closely watched as Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges across multiple regions.
