ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu. The confirmation marks a significant shift in the country’s military leadership amid ongoing security challenges.

Oluyede appeared before the Senate on Wednesday under tight security, where he addressed lawmakers for approximately 20 minutes. He outlined his military career, including his previous role as Chief of Army Staff, and emphasized his commitment to national security and military reform.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised Oluyede’s track record, saying, “Your appointment is a testament to your dedication and service. We trust you will lead with integrity and courage.” The Senate unanimously approved his nomination.

President Tinubu had announced Oluyede’s elevation on October 24, 2025, as part of a broader shake-up in the armed forces. The move is seen as an effort to strengthen Nigeria’s defense posture and address persistent threats from insurgency, banditry, and regional instability.

In a statement following the confirmation, the Ministry of Defence said, “General Oluyede brings decades of experience and strategic insight to the role. We are confident in his ability to unify and modernize our military forces.”

Public reaction has been mixed. Some defense analysts welcomed the appointment, citing Oluyede’s operational experience and leadership style. Others urged caution, calling for transparency and accountability in military operations under his command.

Human rights groups have also weighed in, urging the new CDS to prioritize civilian protection and uphold international humanitarian standards. “We hope General Oluyede will lead with a human rights lens and ensure that military actions do not harm innocent communities,” said a spokesperson for Amnesty International Nigeria.

As Chief of Defence Staff, Oluyede will oversee the coordination of Nigeria’s Army, Navy, and Air Force, and play a central role in shaping defense policy and national security strategy. His leadership will be closely watched as Nigeria navigates complex internal and external threats.
