Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, long considered a key player in Lagos politics, is now expected to contest for a House of Representatives seat in the 2027 elections after his earlier ambitions for governorship and Senate stalled. Sources say the shift reflects both internal party negotiations and pressure from influential figures within the All Progressives Congress.

Obasa, who has served six terms in the Lagos State House of Assembly and remains its longest-serving Speaker, initially positioned himself to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu. He revived the Mandate Group, a political structure tied to President Bola Tinubu, to strengthen his base. But his governorship bid lost traction after Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Council endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate.

Following that setback, Obasa explored a run for the Lagos West Senatorial District, challenging incumbent Senator Idiat Adebule. While some party members supported him, resistance grew from leaders and the women’s wing, who argued for Adebule’s retention to maintain gender balance in the National Assembly. Tinubu reportedly advised Obasa to redirect his ambition toward the House of Representatives, specifically the Agege Federal Constituency.
