ABUJA, Nigeria (FN), Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday, receiving membership cards in what observers say could reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Shortly after the ceremony, Obi urged party members to avoid litigation and internal disputes, warning that court battles could undermine efforts to build a viable political alternative. “We must shun endless court cases and divisions. If we are serious about building a new Nigeria, we cannot waste energy fighting ourselves,” Obi said.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, previously contested the presidency under the Labour Party in 2023, finishing third but energizing a youth-driven movement known as the “OBIdients.” He later left Labour citing internal crises and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he also exited last month over factional disputes.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, contested the 2023 election under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). His move to NDC signals a potential alliance with Obi, raising speculation about a broader coalition of opposition figures.
Party defections are common in Nigeria’s political system. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has switched parties multiple times, while other prominent figures have left platforms due to internal wrangling. Analysts say these shifts reflect the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where alliances are often reconfigured ahead of elections.
Civil society groups welcomed Obi’s call for unity, saying opposition parties must focus on governance issues rather than internal battles. “If the opposition continues to fragment, Nigerians will be left without a credible alternative to the ruling party,” said one advocacy group.
On social media, Obi’s supporters praised his appeal as a sign of maturity, while critics questioned whether repeated defections weaken his credibility. Kwankwaso’s followers expressed optimism that the partnership could strengthen northern and southern support bases.
The joint entry of Obi and Kwankwaso into the NDC could mark the beginning of a new coalition ahead of 2027. Analysts caution, however, that unity and internal discipline will be critical if the party hopes to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite the uncertainty, Obi reiterated his vision of a Nigeria built on justice, compassion, and equal opportunity. “A new Nigeria is possible,” he said.
