Nigerian singer Korede Bello has sparked debate after urging couples to have more children, using the example of late pop legend Michael Jackson to argue that larger families increase the chances of producing extraordinary talents.
In a video shared on Instagram, the “Godwin” crooner questioned modern family trends, noting that many young couples today prefer one or two children. He suggested that this shift could reduce the likelihood of discovering future geniuses. “I just wonder, what if Michael Jackson’s mother had stopped at two kids or six kids? He was the seventh. Imagine a world without him just because she chose fewer children,” Bello said.
Michael Jackson, widely regarded as one of the greatest entertainers in history, was born on August 29, 1958, as the eighth of ten children in the famous Jackson family. Bello argued that Jackson’s success story illustrates how larger families can produce exceptional individuals. “Think about it, imagine a music industry without Michael Jackson. Just because his mum decided to have more kids. It is very rare to see a young couple have three kids these days,” he added.

The singer acknowledged that economic realities play a role in limiting family size but insisted that society should not abandon the idea of bigger households. “Sometimes you have to go farther and deeper to find something special. These one-one children that we are giving birth to, what is wrong? How are we going to get to a place where the house will be filled with kids again? We need more Michaels, we need more,” he said.
Korede Bello is a Nigerian singer and songwriter best known for his 2015 hit single “Godwin,” which became a nationwide anthem and topped charts across the country. Born on February 29, 1996, in Lagos, Bello developed an interest in music at a young age and began performing under the stage name “African Prince” before signing with Mavin Records, one of Nigeria’s leading music labels founded by Don Jazzy. His career breakthrough came with “Godwin,” a crossover track that blended pop with gospel influences, earning him widespread recognition. He followed up with other popular singles such as “Romantic” and “Do Like That,” further cementing his place in Nigeria’s contemporary music scene. Beyond music, Bello is also known for his advocacy work, speaking on issues affecting youth, including education, mental health, and social responsibility. His recent comments urging couples to have more children reflect his tendency to spark conversations that go beyond entertainment, touching on cultural and societal themes.
Bello’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions online. While some agreed with his sentiment about nurturing talent, others criticized the practicality of his advice, pointing to the heavy financial burden of raising large families in Nigeria’s current economic climate. The debate highlights a broader conversation about family planning, economic pressures, and cultural expectations in Nigeria. As couples increasingly opt for smaller families, Bello’s comments have reignited discussions on whether fewer births could affect the emergence of future icons in music, sports, and other fields.
