The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled its governorship and State House of Assembly primary elections in Bauchi, Kwara, and Zamfara states, a move that underscores the party’s efforts to manage its internal processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, announced the changes in a statement on Thursday, confirming that the governorship primaries in Bauchi and Kwara will now hold on Friday, May 22, 2026. The Zamfara State House of Assembly primaries have also been shifted, though the party has yet to provide new dates for that exercise.
Morka explained that the adjustments were necessary to ensure proper coordination and to give party members adequate time to participate fully in the process. He emphasized that the APC remains committed to conducting transparent and credible primaries across all states, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
The rescheduling comes at a time of heightened political activity, as parties across Nigeria intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. Analysts say the APC’s decision reflects the challenges of managing internal democracy in multiple states simultaneously, especially in regions where contests are expected to be fierce. Bauchi, Kwara, and Zamfara are considered politically strategic, with strong grassroots structures and influential local leaders who could shape the outcome of the primaries.
Within the APC, the changes have sparked mixed reactions. Some party members welcomed the move, saying it would allow for better organization and wider participation. Others expressed concern that repeated adjustments could fuel uncertainty and deepen internal divisions. Still, the leadership insists the rescheduling will not affect the overall timeline for candidate nominations and that the party remains on track to meet all legal deadlines.
Observers note that the APC’s handling of these primaries will be closely watched, not only by its members but also by rival parties. The credibility of the process could influence defections, alliances, and voter confidence as the 2027 elections draw nearer. For now, party members in Bauchi, Kwara, and Zamfara have been urged to remain patient and prepare to turn out in large numbers when the primaries eventually take place.
