KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — England’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been disrupted after training equipment was stolen from vehicles transporting gear to the team’s base in Kansas City, local authorities confirmed.

Police said the incident occurred late Friday at Swope Soccer Village, where England is scheduled to train ahead of its opening match against Croatia on Wednesday. Two arrests have already been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

England manager Thomas Tuchel and his squad arrived in Kansas City on Saturday afternoon, expecting the equipment to be ready for use. The theft has raised concerns about whether the disruption could affect the team’s readiness, though officials said training will proceed as planned with the first full session scheduled for Sunday.

A Kansas City police spokesman said: “We are investigating a possible theft of equipment from a team vehicle that arrived in Kansas City with items missing this evening. The investigation is ongoing.”

The incident highlights the logistical challenges of hosting the World Cup across multiple U.S. cities, the first time the tournament has returned to North America since 1994. Security and infrastructure have been emphasized by organizers, and the theft is likely to draw scrutiny as teams settle into their bases.

England, considered one of the tournament favorites, faces Croatia in its opening Group B match before taking on other group opponents. The disruption is not expected to derail preparations, but the Football Association is working closely with local authorities to recover or replace the missing equipment.

Globally, the World Cup is the most watched sporting event, drawing billions of viewers and significant economic activity. Incidents such as Friday’s theft underscore the importance of security planning for teams and organizers as the United States, Canada, and Mexico jointly host the expanded 48-team tournament.

For England, the focus remains on maintaining momentum under Tuchel, who took charge of the national team in 2025. The squad’s ability to adapt quickly to unexpected challenges will be tested as they begin their campaign in Kansas City.
