BENIN CITY, Nigeria (FN) — Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has nominated Terry Igiebor as Chairman of the Edo State Ecological Funding and Management Commission, a move officials say will strengthen environmental management and grassroots development across the state.
Secretary to the State Government Umar Ikhilor announced the nomination Monday, noting that it will be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and confirmation, in line with statutory requirements.
Igiebor, described as a businessman and grassroots politician, is widely recognized for his commitment to community development and empowerment. He previously served on the Edo State Audit Service Commission, where he contributed to promoting accountability and transparency in governance.
Officials said the appointment is expected to bolster Edo’s capacity to manage ecological funds, tackle environmental challenges such as flooding and erosion, and advance sustainable development initiatives.
Environmental commissions in Nigeria are responsible for managing funds allocated to address ecological problems, including deforestation, desertification, and waste management. Analysts say effective leadership in such commissions is critical, as mismanagement of ecological funds has been a recurring issue in several states.
The nomination reflects Edo State’s broader push to strengthen institutions that safeguard the environment and ensure that ecological funds are used effectively to benefit communities.
Local observers note that the appointment of Igiebor, with his background in accountability and grassroots politics, could help bridge the gap between government policy and community needs.
The Edo State House of Assembly is expected to deliberate on the nomination in the coming weeks. If confirmed, Igiebor will oversee strategies aimed at improving environmental resilience and sustainable development across the state.
