The Federal Government says 270 Nigerians are scheduled to return from South Africa this week as part of an ongoing evacuation and repatriation exercise. Officials described the move as part of broader efforts to assist citizens facing hardship abroad and to strengthen Nigeria’s diaspora management policies.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that arrangements have been made for the group’s arrival in Lagos, where they will undergo immigration checks and receive support services. Authorities said the evacuees include families, students, and workers who requested assistance due to economic challenges and rising insecurity in South Africa.
Nigeria has carried out similar evacuations in recent years, including from conflict zones such as Sudan and Libya. Officials say the latest exercise reflects the government’s commitment to protecting citizens overseas, especially in countries where xenophobic violence and economic instability have posed risks to migrants.
South Africa hosts one of the largest Nigerian communities in Africa, with tens of thousands living and working there. Relations between the two countries have occasionally been strained, particularly during outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence. Analysts note that the evacuation underscores the need for stronger bilateral cooperation on migration and security.
