MTN Nigeria says it has fully cleared its foreign currency debt, marking a significant financial milestone for the country’s largest telecommunications operator after years of navigating sharp exchange rate volatility and mounting foreign exchange losses.

The company said eliminating its foreign currency obligations strengthens its balance sheet and reduces its exposure to future swings in the value of the naira. The development is expected to improve financial stability and create room for greater investment in network expansion, digital infrastructure and new technology.

Foreign exchange losses have weighed heavily on MTN Nigeria’s earnings since the Central Bank of Nigeria liberalized the foreign exchange market in 2023, triggering a steep depreciation of the naira. Companies with dollar denominated loans saw their debt obligations rise sharply when converted into local currency, leading to billions of naira in accounting losses.

By paying off its foreign currency debt, MTN Nigeria has significantly reduced one of the biggest risks facing its business. The company said the move positions it to focus on long-term growth while improving its financial resilience in an environment where currency volatility remains a concern.

Industry analysts say the development could strengthen investor confidence in the telecom giant, which serves tens of millions of subscribers across Nigeria. A stronger balance sheet also gives the company greater flexibility to finance future projects without the pressure of servicing expensive foreign currency obligations.

MTN Nigeria has continued investing in expanding broadband coverage, improving network quality and supporting the country’s digital transformation despite challenging economic conditions. The company has also increased its focus on fintech services, enterprise solutions and digital platforms as it seeks to diversify revenue beyond traditional voice and data services.

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector has faced rising operating costs over the past two years due to inflation, higher energy prices and persistent foreign exchange shortages. Operators have repeatedly warned that maintaining network quality requires sustained investment despite the difficult business climate.

Market observers believe MTN’s improved financial position could allow it to accelerate capital spending on 4G and 5G infrastructure, strengthen service reliability and expand connectivity in underserved communities. Increased investment could also support Nigeria’s broader digital economy ambitions.

The announcement comes as investors closely monitor the financial health of major Nigerian companies adapting to the country’s evolving macroeconomic environment. Businesses that have successfully reduced foreign currency exposure are generally viewed as being better positioned to withstand future exchange rate shocks.

While economic uncertainties remain, MTN Nigeria’s decision to eliminate its foreign currency debt is being seen as an important step toward sustainable growth. The company says it remains focused on delivering value to customers and shareholders while continuing to invest in the technology and infrastructure needed to meet Nigeria’s growing demand for digital services.
