Decades of environmental pollution in communities across Nigeria’s oil-rich Rivers state are contributing to respiratory illnesses, contaminating water sources and forcing some families to leave their homes, residents and environmental advocates say.
The pollution is closely linked to the region’s long history of oil exploration and production. Rivers state, part of the oil-producing Niger Delta, has faced decades of oil spills, gas flaring, pipeline leaks and other forms of environmental degradation since commercial oil production expanded in the region in the late 1950s.
Residents in affected communities say the environmental damage has disrupted traditional sources of drinking water, fishing and farming while raising concerns about long-term health risks. Some families have relocated in search of safer living conditions as pollution continues to affect their surroundings.
The crisis reflects broader environmental challenges in the Niger Delta, where oil wealth has generated significant revenue for Nigeria but has also been associated with persistent disputes over pollution, compensation and community rights.
Environmental groups and community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of environmental regulations, faster cleanup of contaminated sites and greater accountability from oil companies and government authorities.
The United Nations Environment Programme’s 2011 assessment of Ogoniland documented extensive contamination of land and water in parts of Rivers state and concluded that restoring the environment would require a large-scale, long-term cleanup effort.
More than a decade later, residents and advocates say the environmental consequences remain a major public health and economic concern, underscoring the continuing challenge of balancing oil production with the rights of communities to a safe and healthy environment.
