Nigeria’s federal government says work to replace damaged expansion joints on the Kara Berger section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, as authorities move to address infrastructure concerns along one of the country’s busiest highways.
The repairs are expected to focus on the expansion joints on the bridge, components designed to accommodate movement caused by temperature changes and traffic loads while helping protect the structure.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a major transportation corridor linking Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, with Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state. The highway serves as a critical route for commuters, businesses and the movement of goods between southwestern Nigeria and Lagos’ ports and industrial areas.
Originally constructed in the 1970s, the expressway has undergone several rehabilitation projects over the decades because of heavy traffic, deterioration and growing demand. Its strategic importance has made periodic repairs a significant issue for commuters and the wider economy.
The latest intervention is aimed at improving safety and maintaining the reliability of the highway, while authorities are expected to manage traffic around the repair area during the work.
The government’s announcement comes as Nigeria continues efforts to upgrade aging transport infrastructure and improve major road links that support commerce and economic activity.
