Hurricane Isaias strengthened into a Category 3 storm on Friday, October 9, as the US Gulf Coast prepared for landfall. Forecasters reported sustained winds of 120 mph and warned of life-threatening coastal flooding and destructive winds.

The National Hurricane Center expected the storm to reach the coast near the Alabama–Florida border late Friday or early Saturday. Dangerous conditions were forecast across the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama and southern Mississippi.

“We are expecting Isaias to be a dangerous hurricane when it makes landfall,” hurricane centre director Michael Brennan said on Thursday, urging residents to complete preparations.

Authorities ordered mandatory evacuations in coastal parts of Florida’s Okaloosa County. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey declared an emergency in 40 counties, while communities opened shelters and prepared for flooding and power outages.

The approaching storm also disrupted offshore energy operations. By Thursday, operators had suspended about 63% of Gulf oil production and evacuated personnel from 121 production platforms.

Isaias became the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026 unusually late in the season, close to the October 8 record set in 1905. Strong El Niño conditions have helped suppress storm development by producing winds that disrupt tropical systems.

The storm shares its name with the 2020 hurricane that struck North Carolina and generated tornadoes along the US East Coast. That earlier event demonstrated how hurricane dangers can spread far beyond the point of landfall.

Although Isaias was expected to weaken after moving inland, heavy rain and strong winds could continue affecting communities. The immediate priority remained evacuating exposed coastal areas before conditions made travel unsafe.
