SERAP Sues INEC Over Alleged Failure to Account for 126.46 billion Naira in Electoral Funds

The national oil company has isolated the damaged pipeline after an explosion devastated homes and businesses in Aleto community. Residents allege that warnings about a gas leak went unanswered before the disaster, while Rivers State authorities promise investigations and support for victims. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has activated emergency response procedures following a gas pipeline explosion that injured about 20 people and damaged dozens of homes and businesses in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. The explosion occurred along Old Bori Road on Thursday, October 15, 2026, reportedly around 5 p.m., sending residents fleeing as flames spread through nearby buildings and commercial premises. In an official statement issued on October 16, NNPC confirmed that the affected pipeline belonged to its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited, and announced that the damaged section had been isolated to prevent further danger. Local reports indicated that approximately 50 houses and shops were affected, although the company said the full extent of the destruction remained under investigation. The incident has intensified concerns about pipeline maintenance, community safety and the handling of reported gas leaks in one of Nigeria's most important petroleum-producing regions. The company said its immediate priorities were protecting residents, preventing further harm and determining the effects of the explosion on people, property and the environment. Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh confirmed that the affected pipeline segment had been isolated and that operational records, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed as part of the investigation. NNPC also announced consultations with community leaders to identify urgent needs and coordinate assistance for those affected. The company did not disclose the technical cause of the explosion, the volume of gas released or the estimated cost of the damage. It urged residents to remain away from the affected location and comply with instructions issued by emergency responders until the area could be considered safe. NNPC Web Customer The explosion reportedly followed concerns about gas escaping from the pipeline in the weeks preceding the incident. Residents said they had detected a persistent gas smell and raised the alarm before the eventual blast. Daniel Chuma, leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, stated that local representatives had written to relevant authorities about a suspected leak and sought an urgent investigation. Community accounts suggested that the gas had been escaping for approximately three weeks, although the precise sequence of reports, inspections and responses has not been independently established. The traditional ruler of Eleme also alleged that warnings had been communicated to the pipeline operator without sufficient corrective action. These allegations are central to the emerging dispute because they raise questions about whether the explosion could have been prevented. NNPC has not publicly accepted responsibility for ignoring warnings, but its decision to review earlier operational reports means the handling of those complaints should form part of the inquiry. Gazette Post Nigeria +2 Damage to businesses: The explosion affected homes, roadside shops and commercial premises in Aleto, leaving residents facing significant rebuilding costs. The human consequences have become clearer as victims describe how the explosion interrupted their daily activities. Esther, a shop owner interviewed by The Guardian on October 19, said she was attending to customers when she heard an explosion, followed by another blast that forced her and others to flee. Residents reported extensive damage to household belongings, merchandise and business premises. Local accounts put the number of injured people at approximately 20, although a final medically verified casualty register has not been publicly released. During an October 17 inspection, Rivers State officials said they had received no reports of fatalities. For those whose homes were damaged, immediate concerns include temporary accommodation, medical expenses, replacing essential belongings and recovering lost income. Victims have called for compensation and an independent examination of the circumstances surrounding the explosion, particularly the allegations that earlier warnings were not adequately addressed. The Guardian Nigeria +1 The Rivers State Government has taken steps to assess the destruction and engage with affected community leaders. On October 17, officials from the Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources and Environment conducted a joint inspection of the explosion site. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, James Epobari Ngochindo, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Environment, Ishmael Tomonialadieokuma, met community representatives and examined the damaged properties. Ngochindo expressed sympathy for residents
