The national oil company has isolated the damaged pipeline after an explosion devastated homes and businesses in Aleto community. Residents allege that warnings about a gas leak went unanswered before the disaster, while Rivers State authorities promise investigations and support for victims. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has activated emergency response procedures following a gas pipeline explosion that injured about 20 people and damaged dozens of homes and businesses in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. The explosion occurred along Old Bori Road on Thursday, October 15, 2026, reportedly around 5 p.m., sending residents fleeing as flames spread through nearby buildings and commercial premises. In an official statement issued on October 16, NNPC confirmed that the affected pipeline belonged to its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited, and announced that the damaged section had been isolated to prevent further danger. Local reports indicated that approximately 50 houses and shops were affected, although the company said the full extent of the destruction remained under investigation. The incident has intensified concerns about pipeline maintenance, community safety and the handling of reported gas leaks in one of Nigeria's most important petroleum-producing regions. The company said its immediate priorities were protecting residents, preventing further harm and determining the effects of the explosion on people, property and the environment. Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh confirmed that the affected pipeline segment had been isolated and that operational records, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed as part of the investigation. NNPC also announced consultations with community leaders to identify urgent needs and coordinate assistance for those affected. The company did not disclose the technical cause of the explosion, the volume of gas released or the estimated cost of the damage. It urged residents to remain away from the affected location and comply with instructions issued by emergency responders until the area could be considered safe. NNPC Web Customer The explosion reportedly followed concerns about gas escaping from the pipeline in the weeks preceding the incident. Residents said they had detected a persistent gas smell and raised the alarm before the eventual blast. Daniel Chuma, leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, stated that local representatives had written to relevant authorities about a suspected leak and sought an urgent investigation. Community accounts suggested that the gas had been escaping for approximately three weeks, although the precise sequence of reports, inspections and responses has not been independently established. The traditional ruler of Eleme also alleged that warnings had been communicated to the pipeline operator without sufficient corrective action. These allegations are central to the emerging dispute because they raise questions about whether the explosion could have been prevented. NNPC has not publicly accepted responsibility for ignoring warnings, but its decision to review earlier operational reports means the handling of those complaints should form part of the inquiry.
