ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called on Nigerians to demand stronger accountability from elected officials, stressing that representation should not be limited to the presidency but extend to legislators and other public office holders.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, Saraki urged citizens to monitor their representatives closely and request feedback on their legislative activities. He argued that if Nigerians consistently asked for legislative records, lawmakers would be compelled to perform better.

Saraki, who also served as governor of Kwara State, lamented that some members of the National Assembly rarely contribute to debates during plenary sessions yet continue to win elections every four years. He said this trend undermines the quality of Nigeria’s democracy and weakens institutions.

He further called for electoral reforms to ensure that competent individuals are elected into office, noting that strong institutions depend on effective representation.

Analysts say Saraki’s remarks reflect growing public frustration with Nigeria’s legislative process, where many citizens feel disconnected from the work of their representatives. Civil society groups have long advocated for greater transparency in parliamentary proceedings, including publishing attendance records and contributions to debates.

Globally, accountability in legislatures is seen as a cornerstone of democratic governance. Countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom regularly publish voting records and committee activities of lawmakers, allowing citizens to track performance. Saraki’s call aligns with international best practices that emphasize transparency and citizen oversight.
