LAGOS, Nigeria (FN) — Nigerian actress Nancy Isime says she does not believe couples should disclose their earnings to each other, stressing that financial matters are private and should remain outside relationship discussions.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by media personality Prince Ita, Isime explained that she has no interest in telling a partner how much she earns and does not expect him to reveal his own income. “Discussions about personal income are completely off the table for me,” she said.
Isime, one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces, emphasized that she values privacy and believes some personal matters should remain within individual boundaries. She added that knowing how much a partner makes is not necessary for a healthy relationship.
Her comments come amid wider debates in Nigeria and globally about financial transparency in relationships. In many cultures, couples are encouraged to share income details to foster trust and joint financial planning. However, experts note that attitudes toward money and privacy vary widely, influenced by cultural norms, gender roles and personal experiences.
Relationship counselors say Isime’s stance reflects a growing trend among younger professionals who prioritize independence and personal boundaries. Critics argue that withholding financial information can create mistrust, while supporters say it protects individuals from exploitation and maintains autonomy.
Globally, similar discussions have emerged in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, where surveys show younger couples are increasingly reluctant to merge finances or disclose full earnings. Analysts say the debate highlights shifting expectations in modern relationships, where privacy and independence often compete with traditional notions of transparency.
