Falcons Soar High: Tinubu Rewards Team with N4.6bn, Houses

The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national football team, has been lavished with rewards by President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Governors Forum following their historic win at the 2024 WAFCON tournament in Morocco. The team was awarded a cash prize of N4.602 billion by President Tinubu, while the Nigerian Governors Forum added N350 million, bringing the total cash reward to N4.952 billion.

The rewards ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Tinubu conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger on the players and technical crew. The President also directed the allocation of three-bedroom apartments for each of the players and technical crew in the Renewed Hope Estate. Additionally, each player received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while the technical crew received the equivalent of $50,000.

The Super Falcons’ victory at the WAFCON tournament was a remarkable achievement, with the team coming back from two goals down to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final. The team’s dominance was evident throughout the tournament, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade winning the Player of the Tournament award, Chiamaka Nnadozie named the best keeper, and coach Justine Madugu winning the best coach award.

The team’s triumph marks their 10th title on the continental stage, solidifying their position as one of the top women’s football teams in Africa. The rewards ceremony was a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication, and the government’s recognition of their achievement is a significant morale boost.
