EBONYI, Nigeria — Ebonyi Gov. Francis Nwifuru has warned that local government chairmen who fail to secure victory for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 elections could be removed from office.
Nwifuru made the declaration in Abakaliki, the state capital, during the inauguration of newly elected chairpersons and vice-chairpersons for Ebonyi’s 13 local government areas.
The governor’s warning underscores the political importance of local government structures ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, when voters are expected to elect a president, members of the National Assembly and state-level officials.
Local government chairmen play a significant role in Nigeria’s grassroots politics, where party organizations, community networks and elected officials often influence voter mobilization and campaign operations.
Nwifuru’s comments also reflect the broader political competition surrounding Nigeria’s electoral system, in which governing parties have historically relied heavily on local structures to consolidate support across states.
Ebonyi, in southeastern Nigeria, has traditionally been associated with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. However, the APC has strengthened its position in the state in recent years, including Nwifuru’s defection from the PDP to the APC in 2023.
The 2027 elections are expected to test the APC’s ability to maintain and expand its political influence in Ebonyi, as parties position themselves for another nationwide electoral contest.
Nwifuru’s warning places additional pressure on the newly inaugurated local government leaders to demonstrate political effectiveness while carrying out their administrative responsibilities.
