LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in a fatal car crash in Nigeria that left two people dead, according to police in Ogun State. The accident, which occurred Monday morning on the busy Lagos–Ibadan expressway, involved Joshua’s vehicle and another car, authorities said.

Lanre Ogunlowo, a spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that the 36‑year‑old British‑Nigerian boxer was taken to a local hospital and is “doing fine” after the collision. Images published by Nigerian media showed Joshua alert and seated in the back of a damaged vehicle shortly after the crash.

Local reports said Joshua was riding in a Lexus SUV when it collided with another vehicle, part of a two‑car convoy traveling through Ogun State, where Joshua has family roots in the town of Sagamu. Police said an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

The two fatalities occurred in the other vehicle involved in the collision, according to Nigerian outlet Punch and multiple international news organizations.

The crash happened just over a week after Joshua knocked out YouTube personality Jake Paul in the sixth round of their widely watched heavyweight bout in Miami.

Joshua, a two‑time world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, had been visiting Nigeria during the holiday period.
