The Nigerian Navy has pledged full support for enforcing the Equipment Leasing Act of 2015, signaling closer cooperation with the Equipment Leasing Registration Authority to strengthen transparency and accountability in the sector. The move highlights the military’s role in safeguarding leased assets, particularly those tied to maritime operations.

During a meeting in Abuja, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abbas assured visiting officials from the authority that the Navy would back enforcement of the law. He stressed that leased equipment, especially those deployed in defense and maritime activities, must be properly registered and traceable to prevent misuse and enhance national security.

Registrar Donald Wokoma of the Equipment Leasing Registration Authority said the agency’s mission is to promote leasing as a driver of economic growth. He explained that proper registration of leased assets ensures transparency, reduces fraud, and supports enforcement in critical industries such as shipping, construction, and defense. The collaboration with the Navy, he added, is expected to strengthen compliance and deter illegal practices.

The Equipment Leasing Act, passed in 2015, provides a legal framework for leasing transactions in Nigeria. By supporting its enforcement, the Navy is helping to secure assets vital for both economic development and national defense. Analysts say the partnership could improve investor confidence in Nigeria’s leasing industry, which has struggled with weak regulation and enforcement.

For the Navy, the initiative carries direct implications for maritime security. Leased vessels, equipment, and technology are often deployed in patrols and operations against piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing. Ensuring that such assets are properly documented reduces risks of diversion and strengthens accountability in naval logistics.

The collaboration reflects a broader trend of security agencies supporting regulatory enforcement in Nigeria. By aligning with the Equipment Leasing Registration Authority, the Navy is not only safeguarding its operational assets but also contributing to economic governance. Observers believe the move could set a precedent for other armed services to back civilian regulatory bodies in strengthening transparency and accountability.
