SAN ANTONIO — A murder case already marked by grief and anger erupted into violence inside a Texas courtroom when relatives of a slain teenager rushed the defendant, setting off a chaotic confrontation that forced officers to intervene. Video of the incident, which happened in October 2023, has resurfaced online and is again drawing widespread attention.
The defendant, Victor Nathaneal Rivas, was 18 at the time and was appearing in Bexar County’s 144th District Court in San Antonio. He had been charged with murder in the May 2022 shooting death of 15 year old Ethan Soto.
Courtroom video shows members of Soto’s family suddenly moving past the area reserved for spectators and heading toward Rivas. Within seconds, several people were involved in a struggle as deputies and court officers tried to separate the two sides and regain control of the room.
Authorities later said two adults and two juveniles were arrested in connection with the disturbance. They faced accusations related to assault and disrupting court proceedings. Rivas’ attorney, Adam LaHood, said his client suffered bruising and swelling but did not appear to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
Reports from the time said tensions had been building before the confrontation. Members of Soto’s family believed Rivas had made a gesture toward them while waiting for his case to be called, prompting an emotional reaction that quickly turned physical.
The courtroom violence reflected the deep pain surrounding Soto’s killing. Prosecutors said the teenager was shot near his San Antonio home on May 16, 2022, after a dispute linked to THC cartridges, products containing the psychoactive ingredient found in cannabis.
Investigators said Soto’s mother had earlier tried to settle the disagreement by paying money connected to the disputed cartridges. Despite that effort, authorities said Soto was later confronted and fatally shot, turning what began as a relatively minor dispute into a homicide case.
The killing came amid broader concerns about gun violence among young people in San Antonio. Police officials said at the time that arguments and personal conflicts were increasingly being settled with firearms, raising alarm among law enforcement officials and community leaders.
Rivas’ criminal case continued after the courtroom fight. In April 2025, he pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. He also received a 10 year sentence for evading arrest in a motor vehicle, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
The Soto family later suffered another devastating loss. Ethan’s sister, Savanah Soto, who was pregnant, was killed along with her boyfriend, Matthew Guerra, in an unrelated case in December 2023. Their deaths brought renewed public attention to a family already coping with the loss of Ethan.
The resurfaced courtroom video remains a striking reminder of how grief, anger and trauma can overwhelm families involved in violent-crime cases. It also underscores the difficult role courts play in protecting defendants and victims’ relatives while ensuring that even the most emotional cases are resolved through the justice system rather than through retaliation.
