PDP Insists No Leadership Vacuum Amid Internal Disputes

ABUJA (FN), Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has dismissed claims of a leadership vacuum, insisting that its structures remain intact despite ongoing internal disputes.

In a statement Thursday, party officials said the PDP continues to function under its established organs and leadership, rejecting speculation that divisions within the party had created instability. “There is no leadership vacuum in our party,” the statement read, adding that the National Working Committee and other organs are “fully operational and committed to steering the PDP toward its objectives.”

The declaration comes amid heightened political maneuvering ahead of upcoming elections, with critics suggesting that factional disagreements could weaken the party’s ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). PDP leaders countered that such claims are politically motivated and aimed at undermining confidence in the opposition.

On social media, reactions were mixed. Supporters welcomed the reassurance, saying it was important to project unity at a time when Nigerians are demanding credible alternatives. Skeptics argued that the party must go beyond statements and demonstrate cohesion through transparent decision-making and effective grassroots mobilization.

Political analysts note that the PDP has faced similar challenges in the past, particularly during transitions in leadership and disputes over candidate selection. Opinion leaders warn that unless the party consolidates its internal structures, it risks losing momentum in the face of mounting economic and governance concerns across the country.

The PDP’s insistence on stability reflects broader efforts to reassure members and the public that Nigeria’s oldest opposition party remains a viable political force, even as it navigates internal disagreements and external pressures.
