Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, on Saturday formally launched his bid for a fifth term in office at a grand ceremony in Zaria, Kaduna State. Declaring his intention to contest for the seat at the Mallawa Eid Ground, Abbas used the occasion to highlight what he described as the many democratic dividends his representation has attracted to the people of Zaria. He pointed to infrastructure projects, educational initiatives, and empowerment programs as evidence of his commitment to his constituency.
Abbas, who first entered the House of Representatives in 2011, has steadily risen through the ranks, culminating in his election as Speaker in June 2023. His tenure has been marked by efforts to strengthen legislative independence, promote reforms, and expand constituency outreach. He reminded supporters that his record included sponsoring dozens of bills, many of which were signed into law, and delivering tangible projects such as scholarships, hospitals, and empowerment programs.

The declaration event drew thousands of supporters, party members, and community leaders. A solidarity walk from the Emir’s Palace through Babban Dodo, Lemu, Kofar Doka, and Tudun Wada preceded the gathering at the Mallawa Eid Ground. Traditional music, drumming, and Hausa cultural performances energized the crowd, while student associations, women groups, youth organizations, and persons with disabilities joined in the show of support.
Reactions to Abbas’s bid were mixed. Supporters praised him for consistency and delivery of projects, describing him as a humble and result-oriented leader. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu called Abbas “a blessing to Nigeria.” Critics, however, questioned the need for a fifth term, arguing that new voices should be given a chance in Zaria’s representation. On social media, some users applauded the G-6 style solidarity of his supporters, while others dismissed the event as political theater.
Political analysts say Abbas’s declaration underscores the growing trend of long-serving lawmakers consolidating influence within their constituencies. His bid is expected to shape the dynamics of Kaduna politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly as opposition parties weigh their strategies against the APC’s dominance in the region.
