Nollywood has lost one of its vibrant voices with the passing of actor and lecturer Patrick Okoye, fondly known as “Energy” or “Patosky.” He died at the age of 41, his death announced Thursday in a post on his Instagram page that simply read, “Rest in peace, legend.”

Okoye was not only a familiar face on screen but also a professor in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State. He was celebrated for his commanding presence in Nollywood films, often portraying traditional roles such as Igwe and Onowu. His artistry extended beyond acting; he was also a singer, dancer, and choreographer, remembered by colleagues and students as a “total artiste.”

Actor Ken Erics confirmed the news in a heartfelt tribute, recalling that he had spoken with Okoye just a day before his passing. “This one hits hard because we spoke barely 24 hours before your demise, and you were hale and hearty,” Erics wrote. He described Okoye as a mentor who encouraged him to pursue Theatre Arts and nurtured raw talents into stars. “This man nurtured raw talents and made stars, many of whom are doing well in the entertainment space,” he added. Erics remembered joining Okoye in his car to attend auditions as a student, and how his guidance shaped his career.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, students, and fans who saw Okoye as more than an actor. He was a motivator, a teacher, and a friend who introduced many to music production, inspired soundtracks, and brought energy to every rehearsal. “Good night, Energy! Good night, Patosky! Good night, the Shimmer Master!! Rest well as you journey through the chthonic realm,” Erics wrote in his farewell.

Okoye’s career spanned collaborations with Nollywood greats including Patience Ozokwor, Osita Iheme, Chinedu Ikedieze, Rita Arum, and Yul Edochie. His film credits include Midnight Love, Old School, Finding a Wife, The Lion, The Jagaban, and Over My Dead Body.

Born in Anambra State, Okoye built a life that straddled academia and entertainment. He mentored generations of students at UNIZIK, many of whom now thrive in Nigeria’s creative industry. His legacy is that of a man who lived fully through art; acting, dancing, singing, and teaching, and who left an indelible mark on Nollywood and the classroom alike.

Patrick Okoye’s death is being mourned across Nigeria. His passing leaves a void in Nollywood and academia, where he was celebrated not only for his artistry but also for his dedication to nurturing the next generation of performers. His colleagues and students remember him as a man of boundless energy, whose influence will continue to ripple through the industry he loved.
