Nigerian soldiers have killed two members of the Lakurawa terrorist group during separate operations in Sokoto and Katsina states, the military confirmed Thursday.

According to security authorities, troops engaged the terrorists in coordinated offensives aimed at dismantling armed groups destabilizing communities in the North West. In Sokoto, soldiers intercepted the insurgents during a patrol, leading to a brief firefight in which one terrorist was neutralized. In Katsina, another terrorist was killed after troops launched a targeted raid on a suspected hideout.

Weapons and other items were recovered from the operations, including rifles, ammunition, and communication devices. Military officials said the seizures would help disrupt the group’s ability to coordinate attacks and terrorize rural communities.

“These operations demonstrate our resolve to restore peace and security in the North West,” said Major General Musa Danmadami, a spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters. “The recovery of weapons and neutralization of terrorists sends a clear message that armed groups will not be allowed to thrive.”

Security analysts note that the Lakurawa group has been linked to violent attacks, kidnappings, and extortion in the region. Their activities have posed significant challenges to farming communities, disrupted trade routes, and fueled displacement.

Local residents welcomed the military’s action but urged sustained efforts. “We are relieved, but we want the army to continue until our villages are safe,” said Mallam Usman, a community leader in Katsina.

Observers caution that while the killings mark progress, terrorist groups in the North-West remain resilient, often regrouping after setbacks. “The challenge is not just neutralizing fighters but dismantling their networks and addressing the socio economic conditions that fuel recruitment,” explained Dr. Hadiza Bello, a security expert at Ahmadu Bello University.
