“Wike-Backed PDP Denies Plans to Affirm Jonathan as 2027 Candidate”

The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports of a planned convention to affirm former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued Friday in Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed described the alleged convention, reportedly scheduled by the Tanimu Turaki-led interim committee, as “false, misleading, and an attempt to create unnecessary political tension.”

“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Mohammed said. He added that the PDP had already concluded its statutory primary elections, including those for the presidency, governorship, National Assembly, and state houses of assembly in compliance with the Electoral Act, the party’s constitution, and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mohammed urged party members and the public to disregard the reports, calling on Jonathan to publicly dissociate himself from the “charade” to protect his credibility. He also asked security agencies to investigate the source of the false reports and warned that the PDP would no longer tolerate its name being dragged into disrepute through unauthorised political activities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the Turaki-led interim committee had scheduled a convention in Abuja to affirm Jonathan as its candidate. However, the Mohammed-led National Working Committee earlier this week affirmed Senator Sandy Onor, a former member of the National Assembly, as its consensus presidential candidate for 2027. Jonathan has not made any official comment regarding his ambition for the upcoming race.

Goodluck Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, remains a prominent figure in national politics. His administration was marked by economic reforms and expansion of infrastructure but also faced criticism over corruption and insecurity. Since leaving office, Jonathan has played roles in peace mediation across Africa.

Nyesom Wike, former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has emerged as a powerful force within the PDP. His factional influence has shaped internal party dynamics, often clashing with other leaders over control of structures and candidate selections.

Reactions to the controversy have been swift. On social media, one user wrote on X: “Dragging Jonathan’s name into factional battles is unfair. He should clarify his position before things spiral.” Another commented: “The PDP needs unity, not confusion. Nigerians are tired of political games.”

Policy analysts have also weighed in. A political scientist at the University of Lagos noted that the conflicting announcements reflect “deep fractures within the PDP that could weaken its chances in 2027 if unresolved.” Stakeholders within the party have urged caution, warning that misinformation could destabilize preparations for the general election.

For many Nigerians, the episode underscores the volatility of the country’s political landscape, where factional disputes and power struggles often overshadow policy debates. As the 2027 elections draw closer, the PDP’s ability to present a united front will be critical to its credibility and electoral prospects
