Desmond Elliot’s Ambition Exposes Cracks in Tinubu’s Lagos Machine

Nollywood actor and Lagos lawmaker Desmond Elliot is facing mounting political pressure that analysts say reveals deeper truths about how President Bola Tinubu has managed his political empire for decades.

Elliot, who represents Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has come under scrutiny amid tensions linked to his fourth‑term ambition and his alleged role in a recent crisis within the Assembly. The matter reportedly drew Tinubu’s attention, prompting his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to intervene.

The episode underscores Tinubu’s long‑tested political method: delegating power to loyalists while ensuring no single disciple becomes the sole channel of influence in any constituency. For years, Tinubu’s Lagos structure has operated through multiple layers of loyalty, with rival camps reporting upward and competing for influence.

Observers say Elliot’s predicament illustrates how Tinubu balances factions to maintain control. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, often described as a controversial figure, has survived repeated challenges thanks to his strategic role in Tinubu’s system as a counterweight to other power centers, including Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu.

Tinubu’s political machine has historically relied on groups such as the Justice Forum and the Mandate Group to manage tensions. During past rebellions, including disputes under former Governor Babatunde Fashola, these groups helped Tinubu reassert control.

But Elliot’s troubles may signal limits to that model. Analysts note that Tinubu’s relocation to Abuja and the demands of the presidency have created openings for his closest allies to assert local control. The Justice Forum’s strong showing in recent local government elections and the emergence of Femi Hamzat as the APC’s governorship candidate reflect a growing role for internal consensus rather than Tinubu’s direct command.

Tinubu remains the ultimate political leader in Lagos, but the system he built has matured into many layers. His disciples now have disciples, and local actors are increasingly fighting their own battles. Elliot’s situation, analysts say, is less about one lawmaker’s ambition and more about the changing character of Tinubu’s Lagos machine — still powerful, but crowded with ambitious loyalists who may not be as easy to command as before.
